13 weeks 36 hrs/wk Nights\ Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician Department/Subsidiary: Lab/Core/Microbiology Effective Date: August 2019 Job Code: Y0216 JOB SUMMARY Performs laboratory testing, verifying results using knowledge of principles, QC, and instruments and interprets results based on physiology. Recognizes and solves problems using skills and technical knowledge. ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY A. Reports to: Laboratory Technical Manager B. Supervises: None C. Key Working Relationships: Laboratory Staff and Pathologists D. Primary Customer Groups: Patients and their families, General Public, Medical Staff, Hospital Staff, and Regional Laboratory clients E. Age/Population of Patients Served: Neonatal Adolescent Geriatric Pediatric Adult X All Ages ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS A. Performs and reports all assigned tests with expected precision and accuracy and obtains blood or other body fluid from patients. B. Operates computer equipment and software programs relative to performance of essential job functions and other laboratory related requirements. C. Records all required quality control results. D. Maintains, calibrates, and repairs equipment with accurate records of services. E. Performs all duties and responsibilities as outlined in CLIA regulations. F. Maintains and appropriate inventory of supplies in the assigned area. Prepares reagents or media in prescribed manner. G. Participates in the evaluation of new procedures, equipment and methods. H. Set up cultures, read gram stains, and perform rapid kit testing in Microbiology. I. Following established standard work practices and using established safety precautions, collects blood specimens utilizing the appropriate venipuncture, capillary fingerstick or heelstick technique with patients of all age groups. J. Accurately identifies patients prior to collection of specimens using two patient identifiers and accurately labeling the specimens in the presence of the patient as established by laboratory policy. K. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations. L. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. M. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs. N. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Guiding Behaviors. O. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment. P. Performs other responsibilities as requested by manager or department head. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS A. Participates in Process Excellence activities. B. Serves as a preceptor as needed. C. Sign off on new staff competency-based orientation as a preceptor. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS A. Education: 1. Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology is required or qualifies as an MLT under the CLIA high complexity testing personnel qualifications. B. Experience: 1. Previous experience is preferred. C. Special Skills and Competencies 1. MLT (ASCP) registry required or completed within two years of hire. 2. Membership and active participation in professional organization are desirable. 3. Must have the ability to work flexible hours. 4. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with other hospital personnel, patients, vendors and service personnel. 5. Completes the following mandatory courses (check all that apply). X Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status. . **Microbiology staff, PRN, and contract employees who are not performing phlebotomy are not required to have BLS NA Completes Mandatory Reporting: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse requirement within 6 months of hire and renews this requirement every 5 years. NA Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. NA Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. NA Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. NA Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. NA Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
